Migrate to Mailcheer
Switching tools is scary for good reason: you can lose your list, your sender reputation, or both. Here is how to lose neither.
8steps, and nothing goes out until you decide.
Step-by-step guide
- 01
Export your list from your current tool as a CSV. Every platform allows it: it is your right.
- 02
Export your suppression list too : unsubscribes, hard bounces, complaints. This is the step everyone skips, and the most expensive one to skip.
- 03
Add those addresses to your suppression list before importing your contacts Order matters: an address already in the suppression list enters as unsubscribed, regardless of the file bringing it back. The other way around, it enters as active.
- 04
Import the list Three columns are read: address, first name, last name. Mailcheer guesses them from your headers; you correct before confirming.
- 05
Authenticate your domain : SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, using your hosting provider's guide. Allow fifteen minutes to an hour.
- 06
Send yourself a test , read it on your phone, click the links.
- 07
Ramp up over two to three weeks rather than sending to your whole list on day one. Inbox providers watch for consistency.
- 08
Keep the old account for a month , long enough to confirm nothing is missing.
How long it takes
The three steps that actually need your attention. The rest happens while you do something else.
- < 1 minConfirm the three guessed columns and submit. The report then shows how many addresses came in, how many were duplicates, and how many were invalid.
- 15 minAdd the six DNS records at Cloudflare. A little more at other providers.
- 2–3 weeksRamp up volume from a new domain rather than sending to your whole list on day one.
Three things to prepare
Your contacts come across, and your unsubscribes stay unsubscribed. Three things are worth preparing before you export.
- Your custom fieldsThe import reads address, first name and last name. A 'city' or 'company' column shows on the mapping screen: recreate the field in Mailcheer, then fill it in.
- Your suppression listAdd it before importing your contacts: address by address in settings, or through the API for a long list.
- Your old reportsExport them if you want to keep them: your Mailcheer stats start with your first send.
What actually goes wrong
A migration fails on what you forget to carry over with the list: unsubscribes, hard bounces, complaints.
Four pitfalls
- Forgetting the suppression listEmailing someone who unsubscribed from your old tool is a violation, and almost certain to result in a complaint.
- Sending to your whole list on day oneA new domain that sends ten thousand messages at once gets filtered, with no appeal.
- Reactivating dormant contactsAn address that has not opened anything in three years is often a spam trap. It costs more than it earns.
- Changing tools and domain at the same timeChange one variable at a time, so you know where a problem comes from.
